How to Use AI Without Lying to Yourself
The New Tired
Something weird has been happening in offices , kitchens, and home setups everywhere for about the last year and a half.
People who use AI for work are tired in ways they cannot explain. They aren't working harder. Most are working easier. Their output is up . Their hours are flat. By every visible metric , they should feel fine.
They don't. They feel like they got hit by a truck.
This is being said in offices , in DMs , around dinner tables , in therapists' offices . I haven't been doing much . I'm exhausted. I can't tell what I did all day . I want to sleep but I don't even want to sleep, I just want to stop. The people saying it have different jobs, different schedules , different lives . The one thing they share is AI in the workflow.
There isn't a name for this feeling yet, so I am going to give it one . The new tired .

The new tired .
It is not the tired you get from working harder. It is not the tired you get from working longer . It is the tired you get from working denser. From not having a single moment all day where your brain could coast.

To understand why, remember what a normal workday used to feel like. It had texture. Some parts required deep thinking. Some parts required almost none. Writing a status update. Reformatting a doc. Drafting a routine email. Naming a function. Renaming the function because the first name was bad. Fixing a typo. These were the easy parts. They didn't feel easy at the time. They felt like work. But they were structurally easier than the hard parts , and your brain knew the difference. The easy parts were the breathers. They paid for the hard parts.
AI ate the easy parts .
What's left, all day , is the hard parts. Specify the prompt. Wait . Read the output . Notice the subtle bug . Push back . Re-prompt. Read again. Stitch the output into the work. Notice the inconsistency. Fix it. Move on. Specify the prompt. Wait. Read the output.
This is the cognitive equivalent of running sprints with no walks in between. The breathers got stripped out, and the day became one long , uninterrupted concentration drill.
By 5 PM your prefrontal cortex feels like a biscuit soaked in chocolate milk. The worst version is when it breaks and drops. You watch it go.

The pitch was less work . The reality is shifted work . The labor that used to be production migrated into specification, verification, and integration . None of those is easier than producing. Most are harder.
Specification sounds easy. It isn't. To write a clear prompt, you have to know exactly what you want, which is most of the thinking. You aren't offloading the thinking. You're front-loading it .
Verification means reading the output carefully enough to catch what's wrong. This is harder than producing. Spotting wrong-but-plausible takes more focus than spotting obviously-broken. You can't skim. You can't trust . You are essentially a copy editor for an unreliable junior who is fast, confident, and writes a hundred pages a day. You will not be relaxing.
Integration means stitching the output into the work that's already there. The work-after-the-work. Except now it is most of the work.
So the day is: specify , wait , verify, integrate. Specify, wait, verify, integrate. Repeat for ten hours. Notice no easy parts in there. The day has lost its texture, and what's left is one continuous shift of dense effort that doesn't feel like effort and doesn't reward like effort and leaves you face-down at 6 PM wondering what hit you.

There is also the vigilance.
The model lies, sometimes. Not maliciously. It hallucinates . It is confidently wrong about things it doesn't know it doesn't know. Working with it means reading every output with a low, sustained suspicion. You aren't absorbing . You're cross-checking . You can't drop the guard .
This is the same kind of tired a court interpreter is . The same kind of tired a parent watching a toddler near a pool is. Low-grade vigilance , hours on end, no off switch. The brain you have was built for a world where most of what you read was probably correct. The brain you have is having a hard week.

A normal task, pre-AI, looked like this. Goal. Do the thing. Done.
A normal task, post-AI, looks like this. Goal. Prompt. Output. Compare output to goal. Edit. Second prompt iterating on what was wrong. Second output. Compare. Final edit . Decide whether to ship . All held in your head at once, sometimes across three open tabs, while a coworker DMs you about a fourth thing .
The brain can do this. The brain will do this. The brain will do this for ten hours, and then at 6 PM you will close the laptop and feel a low whine in your skull , like mental tinnitus, an artifact of the dozens of context-switches that never fully closed.

And then there is the part that compounds.
Recovery time vanishes.
In the old workday, the routine tasks were also the recovery. Writing the email gave your brain a break from the hard thinking. Fixing the typo was almost meditative. The boring parts did real cognitive work. They were the active rest your brain needed between the hard parts .
AI ate the active rest. Now every task is the hard part . There is no place in the day where your brain coasts .
People go home and try to recover . They scroll . They watch TV . They lie down .
None of it works very well , because passive consumption is not the same kind of rest as active-but-low-intensity work . The brain needs the latter. Scrolling is what you do when you can't get the latter . It is decaf rest . You do not wake up rested the next morning, because you never actually rested.
This is why so many people are tired in ways they can't name. They are not doing more work. They have lost the rhythm of work-and-rest inside the workday, and you can't make it up after hours , because after hours isn't the same thing .

So. The pitch was less work . The reality is shifted work , and the shift went in the worst direction possible . From rhythmic to constant . From textured to flat . From work-and-rest to work-and-work-and-work.
You are not doing more thinking. You are doing more concentrated thinking , with the boring breathers stripped out.
This is why the new tired feels wrong . It doesn't match the input. You worked normal hours. You " did less " by every measurable proxy. You should feel fine. You don't. You feel like you ran a marathon while sitting down.
The honest version is: you did . The marathon happened in your head. Nobody else can see it, including you, because the visible part of your day was easier than ever . The invisible part was relentless .
